Turn an old pillow case into a Sarong with me


I had been working in an Indian pharmaceutical company for a few years and it had inspired me to make a sarong for Kimchimon to wear to school for Deepavali celebration last year.

Before we start, let's know more about sarong. Based on Wikipedia, A sarong or a sarung is a large tube or length of fabric, often wrapped around the waist, worn in many parts of Asia and the Pacific islands. The fabric often has woven plaid or checkered patterns, or may be brightly colored . Many modern sarongs have printed designs, often depicting animals or plants. Different types of sarongs are worn in different places in the world, notably the lungi in the Indian subcontinent and the izaar in the Arabian Peninsula.

This sarong we are making is much more simpler and easier for kids to go to the loo and put it back on (it's simply a long skirt). You will need:

1) An old pillow case
2) Elastic band for the waist (i used an old elastic band from my pants)
3) Sewing thread of the same colour as the pillow case
4) A pair of pants to use as a size reference or you can actually take measurements of your kid before hand 
5) A pair of scissors
6) Needles for sewing or a sewing machine
7) Pins for pinning
8) Colour pencil or drawing chalk
9) Ruler
10) An iron-on sticker for decoration (optional)
11) Safety pin

Here's how to make it: 
1) Flip the pillow case to the under side and cut and the flap on the opening of the pillow case (be careful not to remove the hem)
2)  Place the elastic band on the opening of the pillow case. Fold it down and pin it using pins 
3) Remove the elastic band and sew the fold into place
4) Lay the pants on top of the pillow case, aligning the top of the pants with the top of the pillow case
5) Draw a line with the pencil or chalk and ruler before pinning it along the lines
6) Cut along the lines and sew the longer side together
7) Fold in the shorter side and sew 
8) Using a safety pin, insert the elastic band into the flap made earlier (make sure to leave approximately 1cm at the start) until it reaches another end.
9) Sew the ends of the elastic band together
10) Flip the pillow case back to the right side and iron the iron-on sticker

Our New House - House Hunting

After Kimchimon turned 1, I felt that maybe it was time for us to find a home of our own. My mother-in-law's place was great, very convenient with supermarket and the train station just right at our doorstep but this tiny human needed a bigger and more toddler friendly place. DIY Toys for Kimchimon

I had a T-shirt that Kimchimon likes the penguin print so much that I had decided to make a rattle toy based on the print. This post will take you through the steps to DIY your own penguin rattle toy and a busy board.
