Feng Shui
While waiting to get the keys to our house, we had to find the renovation contractor that could accommodate to our budget. We also got the house checked out by a Feng Shui master after the house was handed to us.
Renovation and Home Improvement Program
In general, the Feng Shui of the house was good, and most importantly, not haunted 😁. Based on the Feng Shui master, there were a few things in the kitchen that needs to be changed, such as the position of the sink and kitchen hob. The kitchen cabinets needed to be changed anyway as they were already quite worn out.
Our budget for renovation was not a lot but at the same time, we didn't plan to have the house undergo a major renovation. We met up with a number of contractors but the price that they quoted was over our budget. Lucky for us, Kimchimon's nanny had someone that she knew is a contractor and would be able to help us with the renovation. The flat was eligible for Home Improvement too.
Home Improvement is a upgrading program for houses which had reached 30++ years. This program was initiated by the HDB and the upgrading works are subsidized and can be paid using CPF. These upgrading works include revamping the whole toilet (handle bars and rails can be included and we got to choose the design too), both master and kitchen, change of the gate and door and also the rubbish chute.
The renovation works commenced first. These were the works done then:
- Painted the whole house
- Changed the vinyl floors in all of the rooms
- Added a false ceiling in the master bedroom which also includes lighting
- Shifted the shelves left behind by the previous owners from the bedroom to the living room as they were still in good condition.
- Removed and installed new cabinets, sink and electric hob in the kitchen
Total cost: $17000
While the Home Improvement only started a few weeks after the renovation. The works done include:
- Removing the bathroom accessories
- Hacking of the walls and floors
- Installing new tiles for the walls and floors
- Installing the taps and water heater (bought using cash)
- Wiring of the water heater (the previous owner was using water heater tank but we wanted to change it to individual water heater)
- painting of a wall in the master bedroom
Total cost: $900+
Total time taken: 3 months
Here's some of the pictures of the completed flat:
